Good advice from experienced alumni to new engineers and photos from Graduation Ceremonies this autumn where nearly 600 new Bachelors of Engineering and Masters of Science in Engineering were celebrated.
Several times every year, DTU celebrates all new engineers at Graduation Ceremonies and always invite an alum to come and talk and inspire the new graduates. This is to both provide insights into how a career can shape and give a few good tips to get a good start.
In June 2022, two alumni spoke to the new Bachelors of Engineering and Masters of Science in Engineering. Here is their advice as well as photos from the Graduation Ceremonies:
Jacob Lundgreen Philipsen - MSc in Engineering (1995), PhD (1999) - CEO, Advalight ApS
Advice from Jacob:
- Your education from DTU is a tremendous springboard; probably the best in Denmark in terms of numbers of doors that it may open to you.
- Don't expect to have the world at your feet from day one. You have to apply yourself to succeed. You will have to solve difficult problems, and there will be competitors around the world striving to beat you to the finishing line. Do your very best and never stop learning.
- Long-term career planning does not make sense: As you go along, you will acquire new skills as well as insights about yourself, your capabilities and interests – therefore, it makes sense to reevaluate your direction as your careers and your lives move on.

Rugeia Raysan Rashid - Bachelor of Engineering, Building (2017) - Structural engineer/disciplinary manager, COWI
Advice from Rugeia:
- Criticism of your work is not a criticism of your person, but rather a help to make you better and sharper. So believe in yourself, be patient and keep working hard to achieve your goals. Embrace criticism — and remember that it goes both ways: you should also give constructive criticism to others.
- Success is not about your grades, but very much about who you are, what you are passionate about, your way of being and your willingness to go the famous extra mile to achieve dreams and goals. You're more than a number on a sheet of paper.
- It is important to remember that it is the really complex things that often move us as humans and engineers. So search for the complex tasks, especially when the task seems unmanageable and you have ended up in deep water. For it is only when we find out that we can actually cope with the incalculable task that we discover that we have a far greater potential than we think ourselves.
In conclusion, I would like to quote the author Simon Sinek: "Working hard for something we don't care about is called stress — working hard for something we love is called passion".
