The DTU Nanotech spinout company, BluSense Diagnostics, has been selected together with 20 universities and companies from around the world to develop new technological solutions for the fight against the Zika virus.

In the spring of 2016, the US-AID (the U.S Agency for International Development) launched the Combating Zika and Future Threats Grand Challenge requesting innovative ideas and solutions. Of the 900 submitted ideas, 21 were selected to receive financial support from US-AID. Almost 100 MDKK have been allocated to be distributed between the 21 companies and universities.

BluSense Diagnostics is already working on the development of a system for in-field diagnostics of Dengue fever. The solution is a small apparatus which is combined with a disposable chip that is specifically designed to detect Dengue. Only a single drop of blood is needed to perform the analysis and the diagnosis is ready after a few minutes.

The technology behind is a DVD/Blu-Ray based system which integrates sensors, microfluidics and readout on a single centrifugal platform. Read more about the technology behind BluSense Diagnostics here.

BluSense Diagnostics now aims at developing a similar system targeted at detecting Zika virus.
