Several times every year, DTU celebrates all new engineers at Graduation Ceremonies and always invite an alum to come and talk and inspire the new graduates. This is to both provide insights into how a career can shape and give a few good tips to get a good start.
In November 2022, three alumni spoke to the new Bachelors of Engineering and Masters of Science in Engineering. Here is their advice as well as photos from the Graduation Ceremonies:

Kim Lehmann – BSc of Engineering (mechanical engineer) (1989) – President & CEO, Kamstrup A/S
Advice from Kim:
- Your life attitude and your approach to collaboration are essential to your future and often more important to your success than your professional skills.
- When choosing a job, it is important that you have clear criteria for what you are going into. It is, however, also important to enter the labour market. It is easier to get job number 2 and 3 than the first job. Spend the first (many) years trying different types of jobs, disciplines and businesses.
- Make sure you take responsibility for balance in your life. There must also be room for family, friends and hobbies.

Adam Kadhim – MSc in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering (2012) – Business Development Manager at Linde
Advice from Adam:
- If you have done something different or special during your study time, do not be shy to promote it. Highlight the value to the employer you are going to work for.
- Travel for business if you have the chance to do so. Being out in the field gives you invaluable experience.
- Try to be the best at what you do and focus on what you can control.
- I can guarantee you that you will not use all the knowledge from your education in your daily job, and your learning will not stop here. However, the technical and social skills you now possess will follow you for the rest of your life.

Emilie Lundbye Dalsgaard – MSc in Mathematical Modelling and Computation (2017) – Senior Data Scientist at Damvad Analytics
Advice from Emilie:
- Stay curious and nurture your curiosity – it will lead you to new ideas, perspectives and joy.
- Keep learning. When confronted with complex situations remember to have more questions than answers and admit to being puzzled or confused. Be willing to say: “I don’t know, but I want to find out”. This way you will retain humility and stay a person others want to seek out and learn from.
- You regret the things you do not do. Let yourself take chances. This way, far more doors will open for you and you will have far more fantastic experiences in both your professional and personal life.
