Several times every year, DTU celebrates all new engineers at Graduation Ceremonies and always invite an alum to come and talk and inspire the new graduates. This is to both provide insights into how a career can shape and give a few good tips to get a good start.
In June 2023, two alumnae spoke to the new Bachelors of Engineering and Masters of Science in Engineering. Here is their advice as well as photos from the Graduation Ceremonies:

Maja Køhl Winther – BSc of Engineering (Building and Civil Engineering) (2016) – Head of Capture Office, COWI A/S
Advice from Maja:
- Choose your boss carefully – a boss who wants you and sees something in you, and who helps to push you in the right direction. And choose a workplace where you feel comfortable, safe and can be yourself – and where you have colleagues who see something in you and who will be there for you and can lift you up. Remember to appreciate them.
- It is not a defeat to find out that you want something different than you thought. You change, and your interests change. The direct path is not always the one you think. Detours open doors you might not have expected.
- Take chances, say yes and expand your horizons. Be curious, have fun. Remember that the only person responsible for your future and happiness is yourself.

Marta Arcari Madsen – MSc in Engineering, Physics and Nanotechnology (2012) – SVP, Head of Markets & Products, TDC Erhverv
Advice from Marta:
- Catch opportunities. It’s not possible to plan your career ahead. Things change and you get chances both work wise and life wise. Take things with an open mind. Choose things that give you purpose and that drive you, because it solves a problem or is close to your heart. Focus on your spikes and not on your weaknesses. Develop your talent and shine.
- Find good mentors and follow them. These are people that believe in you and can inspire you and who dedicate themselves to make you succeed and show your potential.
- Invest in the people around you. Teams can do wonders, both when you’re part of a team or leading a team.
