Several times every year, DTU celebrates all new engineers at Graduation Ceremonies and always invite an alum to come and talk and inspire the new graduates. This is to both provide insights into how a career can shape and give a few good tips to get a good start.
In November 2023, three alumni spoke to the new Bachelors of Engineering and Masters of Science in Engineering. Here is their advice as well as photos from the Graduation Ceremonies:

Peter Luke - BSc of Engineering (Building and Civil Engineering) (1995) - Corporate Vice President of General Projects, Novo Nordisk A/S & professional board member
Advice from Peter:
- Say yes to the "boring" tasks that others avoid at the start of your career. You will learn a lot very quickly – and your new colleagues will also learn a lot. Be curious, ask about the tasks and seek feedback when you have finished a piece of work.
- Try to put yourselves in other people's roles and understand their perspective. Do not point fingers – look at the problem and solve it. You will build huge trust and be seen as decent colleagues.
- It is important to give back. Engineering students will want to learn from you, already when you have a year of experience. Take from the network and give to the network!

Mette Engelbrechtsen - MSc in Engineering, Sustainable Energy (2012) - Chief Advisor, Danish Energy Agency
Advice from Mette:
- Create a guiding compass/a list of guiding principles for your future life and career. Be ambitious, but be yourself and keep your inner values.
- You are not alone. Between all DTU engineers there is a special bond. Ask for help and support each other.
- You are the future and will help make the world a more livable place.

Isabel Becker - MSc in Engineering, Civil Engineering (2016) - Senior Engineer, Rambøll
Advice from Isabel:
- Technical knowledge is key, but communicating it is everything. You all have a degree in super complex problem solving and it often involves working with others in teams. Being able to respectfully argue your case, listen and being open to change your mind is important. How you convey your ideas will directly influence the impact you will have.
- Building your network will come naturally if you continue to seek new experiences with others. Join new communities and put yourself out there.
- Seek balance. Do not put all of your focus on work and find passions outside of work which can help you diversify your energy and your attention. Life is a continuous journey; balance is vital for sustained career success.
